Students gain skills at Duke of Edinburgh Training Weekend

One hundred and sixty two Year 9 students braved the elements last weekend to undergo extensive training for their Duke of Edinburgh expeditions in May. They attended two days of training, one based in school and one spent walking in the Chess Valley. During the school based day, the students were trained in emergency procedures, CPR and First Aid, in addition to learning how to put a tent up, pack a rucksack and cook a meal on a trangia stove. During their walking day the students practised their map reading and compass skills, and learnt about the countryside code.

Duke of Edinburgh Scheme coordinators, Mrs Kirby and Mr Taylor, extended their thanks to all staff, parents and student leaders, ambassadors and prefects who helped throughout the weekend, without whose help the weekend would not have been possible.

Thanks to such a thorough training weekend, the students are now ready to embark on their expeditions in May, and we wish them every success for their future challenge.
