September's STEM news

It’s another busy term for staff and students in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths). Year 9s have been busy applying for coveted places at the Royal Institution Engineering Masterclasses which are to be held at Leonardo's in Luton on Saturday mornings. Mrs Quinton, STEM co-ordinator, reports that there has been a huge amount of interest and students will learn later this month whether or not they have got a place.

STEM club begins again on Mondays after school. This year, the club is open to all and has exciting plans in store for those who join up. Students will be given a chance to enter three national competitions: Shell’s Bright Ideas Challenge, the Farm Tech Challenge and  BP’s Ultimate STEM Challenge in which students have to design a wing for a drone.

Year 8 boys have been recruited for a fascinating study by King’s College London into the effect of sleep on education. As part of the study, they have agreed to wear a watch which collects information about sleep patterns and will be undertaking challenges on a specially designed ipad app.
